Each summer, the 100 Black Men of South Florida partners with the FIU Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences to hold its High School Summer Nursing & Health Sciences Academy. The program is open to all high school students (including rising 9th graders) and is held at the FIU Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences. The program is housed in FIU’s exclusive Simulation Teaching And Research Center, a.k.a., STAR Center. There, students have access to innovative resources, technologies and teaching environments that provide abundant opportunities for interdisciplinary instruction and collaboration, and encourage advanced research in healthcare delivery and practice. Students receive instruction in various areas including nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and athletic training. Further, the students hear presentations from admissions and campus life.
In 2017, the program was the subject of a podium presentation at the Sigma Theta Tau International 28th International Nursing Research Congress in Dublin, Ireland. Since its inceptions, approximately 250 high schools students have completed the program.
